On your way around the volcano to the lake, turn left for the National Park and Arenal Observatory Lodge, a former farm on the base of the volcano. It was converted into a lodge in 1973 for the volcanologists from the Smithsonian Institution. This well-known hotel, which has a close, bird’s-eye view of Arenal, is protected from a lava flow by the Agua Caliente River gorge. Located within the national park and bordering the Monteverde Cloud Forest, it’s no surprise that the lodge received a “Four Leaf” rating from Costa Rica’s sustainable tourism certification program. The lodge owner, William Aspinall, former director of Monteverde, has instituted a new three-day hike through the rainforest to Monteverde. The lava flow at night no longer faces this side of the mountain, but you get to see daytime eruptions.
